WOODBLOCK
Hey guys!!
So I've decided to finish off the year (yes its that time again... another college year coming to an end!!) with a bang!
I started off with woodblock as I had success with it last semester!
I remember taking a photograph of my nanny making brown bread and it was a close up of her hands.. there was so much small detail in the close up of her hands that I thought to myself "This would make a great woodblock!!" So, I carved out 2 separate woodblocks both A5 in size. Using 2 different pictures of hands to work off I then drew my image on with permanent marker first as it insured the image wouldn't rub off. Then I went ahead and carved my image! Carving takes quite a long time and a lot of focus. I realized it was more difficult this time around as I was carving out an image so small and with such tiny detail. I went ahead and continued on as I would not be able to see what the image really looked like until I printed it. Then I could critique it.
Inked up!
Printed!
Initially I was happy with my woodblocks and I was thinking of ways to experiment with them. But after a critique with our Tutors they pointed out some unfortunate flaws in my prints that gave me no choice but to re-think things.
I took there advice into consideration and I decided to leave my woodblock and move on to something different.
Looking back on my prints I can see where they were coming from. My photographs are of hands. Not just hands on there own but a baby holding its mom's fingers, my nanny's hands, my parents hands. Holding hands means security, love, affection. This is what I want my prints to show. The wrinkles in my nanny's hands tell a story, they are hands that have gone through years and years of hard work. That is what I want to show in my prints.
