Artist Statement/Future Plans

 

 

¢  This semester had been a very busy one. With the exhibition that took up quite a lot of time, the Dissertation and the Hybrid print project we have had a lot on our schedule. In saying that I feel is has been very successful. This semester I have stuck with a similar theme to that of semester one, that being High Fashion. It is a theme I wanted to keep on in semester two but knew I had to change around my concept and ideas moving my project more forward. As photography clearly is what I enjoy most, I kept it on throughout the second semester. This semester I really focused on clean digital prints and experimentation. I really enjoy contemporary art and I worked on creating contemporary, chic, high fashion pieces as my final prints. Experimenting in-between prints and finding my strengths when it came to photography helped my work in second semester progress and with the use of Photoshop I was able to explore new ways of editing my photographs which helped me create interesting, colourful, abstract digital prints. Each of my pieces have reflections in them. This has a deeper meaning then just a reflection on a surface. To me they represent the reflections of the fashion industry. From my research on the fashion industry in semester one this is where I got the idea of incorporating reflections as a representation of the industry into my prints. I then started incorporating High Fashion and Art into my prints, an idea that was taken from my research of my essay. I have done a lot of research on some of the most famous collaborations between artists and fashion designers. This has helped me gain knowledge which resulted in new ideas for my main studio pieces and my parallel practice. As this semester has drawn to a close I feel my studio project work has progressed in a positive way resulting in modern, interesting high fashion digital prints which I am extremely happy with. In my future plans I hope to continue working on my parallel practice which is of the modern, high fashion still life’s and continue to further my knowledge on the photography studio as I would like to continue using it next year, as well as brainstorm how I may be able to represent my photographs through the use of printmaking.

Parallel Studio Practice

Here is a still life I have set up in my mock home photography studio. I have recreated a still life and made it a modern still life using fashion items to represent my studio theme. As I said in a previous blog post: 

 For my essay this year I wrote about the collaboration between artists and fashion. It was really infesting to write and I learned a lot about the collaborations through out the years and how it has changed the way we look at fashion. Fashion is now being looked at as an art form. I want to take this idea and do a photography piece out of it. My idea is to create a still life inspired by the still life's artists would paint. Instead of using fruit, skulls etc... I am going to use fashion pieces like bags, shoes, fashions magazines etc... I am going to photograph them and edit them in a way to make them mimic the look of a still life painting. 

These photo's are un-edited and I will re-fine them in photoshop and do a new blog post in the coming days showing my final product. This is a project that is a work in progress. As the photography studio in college was unfortunately far to difficult to book even with weeks notice I was forced to set up my own studio at home. I hope to take more pictures in a proper photography studio and print proper digital prints as a result. 

Hybrid print project

My partner for this project was Mairead. The green image on the left is her original image and the grey & white image in the right is my original image. My image is a screen-print of one of my photographs I took in the photography studio. Our work is very contrasting, as mine is very contemporary and digital whereas Maireads has a looser, free-hand drawing look to hers. It was an interesting side project as it showed the collaboration between 2 artists work, which is what my own research for this semester was about.

I am very happy with how they turned out. They will look great hung next to the original prints I had in the exhibition. 

New Prints!!

I am so happy with how these prints turned out! I blended my photographs on photoshop and by changing the opacity on the different layers I was left with a fading effect. My art work style is modern and I feel this ties in well with my project. I also love the colors and the reflection that I made sure to keep in the editing as the refections have a meaning.

Colloboration between Artist and Designer

 

Christian Louboutin and Peter Lippman

 

Considered amongst the most prestigious shoes a woman can slide her feet into, the creations of Christian Louboutin are, for many, the epitome of stylish and luxurious footwear. For the past six years, the brand has created its campaigns in collaboration with American photographer Peter Lippman, a celebrated still-life photographer known for his painterly and atmospheric images. (We featured their collaboration back in 2009, with a campaign that was inspired by Flemish 17th century still-life painting.

For Louboutin’s Spring-Summer 2014 collection, Peter Lippman looked towards European art, this time drawing inspiration from some of the masterpieces of Impressionism: paintings by great masters such as Vincent van Gogh, Claude Monet, Camille Pissarro and Paul Cézanne have been recreated with real flowers, serving as a backdrop for the equally colourful shoes and handbags from Louboutin’s latest collection. The result is truly stunning, since the images look like real paintings, not to mention the fact that the colours and forms of the shoes match the paintings perfectly, as if they were part of the originals in the first place.

 

 

Mini Print Project

We were given a task to pair up with another member of the class and together create a series of edition prints. We must combine 2 ideas together to make one. I am working with my friend Mairead who's work deals a lot with Alzheimer's , aging and losing memory. Our work is completely opposite as mine is very modern. In saying that I feel as our work is so different it will merge well together. I am going to create a digital print (I will photograph an image in the photography studio) Then I will give the print to Mairead and she will print over it.
I am excited to see the final prints.

Countdown untill the end of 3rd year! + New Idea's

We only have less then 2 weeks left of third year! This year seems to have flown by! As the exhibition took up so much of our time we really are in a rush to get everything done for final assessments. As I have focused my work this year on photography and digital print, I want to finish it on a high note.

The photography studio is in high demand these days! I am going to take my own test photographs at home and them re-take them in the studio.

Exhibition Night

The night of the Exhibition was a success! So many people arrived for the opening, there was barely enough room to stand! The exhibition got a great response and we were all so happy with how the night went! So much work was put into this exhibition. I really worked hard on creating pieces that I loved and I know many others did too. I created the kind of art that I love. Art that has a meaning, yet is something sleek and sophisticated. I wanted to create art that can be hung in a house, or in a stylish office etc. It's art that I hope to sell so why not create it for the market! At the end of the day, we are all artists. We must create our own brand and be our own person through our art! This exhibition has really shown me that!

 

 

 

My Photography Prints turned out great! I worked really hard on creating these prints and making sure they were printed at the highest and best quality. The frames really tied it all together and gave them a sleek, modern look. I am hoping to sell them, but for now they will look great in my house!

Exhibition Time!!!

 

Were all so excited for our class Print Exhibition "RUMPUS" We have worked very hard preparing for the night and hope it will be a success. It's hard to believe that the place where the exhibition is being held in John's Square, Limerick was a dilapidated building a few months ago. In a rush we cleared out the building, painted and made it look like a real place. Gone were the multi-coloured walls, and hello to the white, crisp, fresh walls. It now looks like an exhibition space.
